How IV hydration actually works

Skip the gut, go straight to the bloodstream — here's what that really means, and where the science is solid versus still thin.

IV bag being prepared under sterile technique

Every IV drip menu — ours included — talks about "100% absorption." It's true, but it's worth understanding what that actually means before you decide it's worth $150–$200 over a glass of water and a multivitamin.

The mechanism

Why the route matters more than the ingredient

Oral intake has to survive your gut first

Anything you swallow is broken down by stomach acid, filtered by the intestinal wall, and processed by the liver before it reaches general circulation. Depending on the nutrient, that process can leave a fraction of the original dose actually available to your cells — this is called bioavailability, and it varies a lot by nutrient and by dose.

An IV line skips that step entirely

Fluid and nutrients placed directly into a vein enter the bloodstream immediately, at (by definition) 100% bioavailability. That's the entire rationale for IV therapy: it's a delivery method, not a different set of ingredients than what's in a multivitamin.

Where this matters most: correcting a real deficiency, or replacing real fluid loss

If you're genuinely dehydrated — from alcohol, illness, heat, or a hard workout — or genuinely deficient in something like B12 or vitamin D, direct delivery corrects that faster and more completely than waiting on digestion. That part of the case for IV therapy is well established.

Where the evidence gets thinner

If you are not dehydrated and not deficient, the research on whether "more than normal" delivered intravenously produces extra benefit is much weaker — often limited to small studies, mechanism-level lab data, or no controlled human trials at all. We say this plainly on every treatment page, ingredient by ingredient, rather than imply otherwise.

The honest short version: IV therapy is very good at correcting dehydration and documented deficiency quickly. Beyond that, treat drip-specific claims (energy, glow, immunity "boosting") as reasonable-but-unproven unless a page tells you otherwise with a citation.

What this means for you

So is it worth it?

If you're dealing with a rough morning, a cold that's dragging on, or a stretch of not drinking enough water, the fluid and electrolyte replacement alone is a legitimate reason to come in — separate from whatever else is in the bag. If you're generally healthy and just curious, most people still report feeling noticeably better afterward; we just won't tell you it's doing more than it is.
