By the time you feel thirsty, you're often already behind. Here's what else to watch for.

Thirst is a lagging signal, not an early warning system. A lot of people walk around mildly dehydrated most of the day without realizing it's affecting how they feel.
What to actually watch for
Even mild dehydration, well before you'd call yourself thirsty, has been shown to affect mood, energy, and cognitive performance.
Dehydration is one of the more common and overlooked triggers for headaches, particularly in hot climates or after alcohol, exercise, or travel.
This is one of the more reliable at-home indicators — pale, straw-colored urine generally suggests adequate hydration, while dark urine is a sign to drink more.
The bottom line
Drinking enough water throughout the day is the foundation. For faster or more complete rehydration — after heat, travel, a rough night or a stretch of low fluid intake — an IV drip is a straightforward option worth knowing about.
